West Ohio Annual Conference Day One 2024
At Memorial Worship Bishop Palmer sang and expounded on this hymn: “Come, ye disconsolate, where’er ye languish”
Come, ye disconsolate, where’er ye languish;
Come to the mercy-seat, fervently kneel;
Here bring your wounded hearts, here tell your anguish,
Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.

All connected to this reading:
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 NIV
I had to look this verse up as it was read, do I know this passage? Did Paul really say “comfort” eight times???? Something really crazy was happening there, if they needed that much comfort!

Bishop Palmer focused on this line:
The earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.
I knew this line but not from this hymn. I knew it from Crowder
Come As You Are
So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh, wanderer come home
You’re not too far
Lay down your hurt lay down your heart
Come as you are
Come as you are
Fall in his arms
Come as you are
There’s joy for the mourning
Oh, sinner be still
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal
Bishop Palmer talked about the middle class, being defined as those that have no”visible” problems or pretend no to. Which we all know is not true. It hit me hard when he said this:
We cannot heal from stuff we don’t talk about.
Sit with that for a moment. I could write all day on it but for today just hear it…think.

Same drawing with Jesus the great communicator and Savior added in!
Original words from
Thomas Moore.

The original text for this comforting hymn was written by an Irish Roman Catholic, Thomas Moore, he became known as the “Voice of Ireland.” It is said that Moore’s literary skills, both in prose and poetry, contributed much to the political emancipation of his country, for his writings revealed, to the English public, the spirit of a people, whom they had previously found distasteful.
Hymn
The 1st 2 stanzas of this hymn were published in 1824 in Moore’s hymn, ‘Relief in Prayer’.
Ending Verses
2Joy of the comfortless, light of the straying,
Hope of the penitent, fadeless and pure;
Here speaks the Comforter, tenderly saying—
Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot cure.
3Here see the Bread of Life; see waters flowing
Forth from the throne of God, pure from above;
Come to the feast of love; come, ever knowing
Earth has no sorrow but heaven can remove.
Let us pray:
God of grace, we pretend we are fine when we are not. Heal us, Lord from our need to look like we have it all together…invite us to be REAL God with you at our side…
